Yaoundé, 9 October 2019 - The inauguration of the Carrefour Market Ékié shopping centre took place today in the Cameroon capital at a ceremony attended by Dr Taïga, Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries and a number of government officials. The CFAO group was represented by Jean-Christophe Brindeau, Chief Executive Officer of CFAO Retail, and Patrick Lasfargues, Executive Director of Carrefour Group International Partnerships.

Following the opening of the first Carrefour Market in the Bonamoussadi area of Douala in December 2017, Carrefour Market Ékié is the second shopping centre operated by CFAO Retail in Cameroon and is the first to open in Yaoundé, the country's administrative capital. The new site lies in an area of Ékié known as "Dépôt des Planches", in Yaoundé's fourth administrative district, and spans a total surface area of 7,200 m2 (building and car park). It consists of a supermarket providing 1,600 m2 of retail space, two restaurants complete with terrace and four spaces available to local services and brands, which are set to open in the coming weeks.

Since arriving in Cameroon, CFAO Retail has focused on providing employment and bringing value to the local economy. Carrefour Market Ékié has already created 150 direct jobs. Key positions are held by employees, team leaders and managers who have trained in Douala over the past two years.

CFAO Retail is stepping up its relations with local suppliers and producers in the country, who will now have the opportunity to supply the Ékié supermarket in Yaoundé as well as its counterpart in Douala.

Jean-Christophe Brindeau, CEO of CFAO Retail: "Cameroon is a key country in the CFAO Retail strategy and Bonamoussadi's success over the past two years is encouraging. All of this bears out our approach in Africa as we seek to provide quality products and services at competitive prices in key hubs across Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal. In each of these countries, it is vital that we become a driver for the local economy through our commitment to develop national industry and value chains."

Luc Demez, Managing Director of CFAO Retail in Cameroon: "Over the past two years in Douala, we have forged a very strong relationship with local economic stakeholders, important and satisfying work with customers, partners and suppliers to improve quality of life for local people and support economic growth. Our 200 employees are very proud of these achievements. We now plan to replicate the same model and methods in Yaoundé. Our goal for the Carrefour Market Ékié shopping centre has been clear from the outset: more than 35% of our revenue must come from agriculture, animal husbandry, small and medium-sized businesses and industry in Cameroon."

The next step in the CFAO Retail roll-out for Yaoundé will see the opening of a major PlaYce shopping centre including a Carrefour hypermarket and numerous shops. Work on this ambitious project is already underway in the Warda/Ekoudou district.

Adialea, the CFAO-Carrefour joint-venture, is leading food projects in Africa.
